What is Planning Poker Estimation?

Planning Poker Estimation is a YouTrack application that brings collaborative Planning Poker sessions directly into YouTrack. It enables teams to estimate work using the proven Planning Poker technique without switching to external tools.

Does this work with my YouTrack instance?

The application works with:

  • YouTrack Cloud (version 2024.3.0 or later)
  • YouTrack Server (version 2024.3.0 or later)

Both cloud and on-premise installations are supported.

Why is the minimum version 2024.3.0?

This version requirement ensures compatibility with the YouTrack Marketplace which was introduced in 2024.3.0.

What about older YouTrack versions?

If you're running an older version of YouTrack:

  • Upgrade Recommended: We strongly recommend upgrading to 2024.3.0 or later
  • No Workarounds: We cannot provide workarounds for older versions due to API limitations

Can I test before purchasing?

Absolutely! We offer a 14-day free trial with full access to any plan features.

How do I install the application?

  1. Visit JetBrains Marketplace
  2. Enter your YouTrack instance URL and click Install
  3. Or install from YouTrack: AdministrationAppsAdd app... → Browse Marketplace
  4. Your 14-day trial starts automatically

What happens if I uninstall the application?

Data Loss Warning

When uninstalling the application, ALL data (including sessions and configuration) is permanently deleted by YouTrack. There is no way to restore this data after uninstallation.

Subscription data is not affected by uninstallation.

This does not apply to plugin updates - your data is preserved during updates.

We strongly recommend using the uninstallation option wisely and only when necessary.

🌐 Internet Connection & Offline Access

What happens when there's no active internet connection?

Internet Connection Required

Subscription validation requires an active internet connection. The application cannot function without internet access unless you have an Enterprise plan with offline licensing.

Can I use this on-premises without internet?

Yes, with the Enterprise plan. The Enterprise plan supports offline and air-gapped installations with manual licensing. Please contact support to discuss your requirements.

Does the application send my estimation data to external servers?

No! All estimation data stays within your YouTrack instance. The application only connects to Appfero servers to validate your subscription license. Your estimation sessions, votes, and issue data remain completely private on your infrastructure.

What card decks are available?

Planning Poker Estimation includes 5 pre-configured decks:

  1. Default Deck: 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 21, 34, 40, 55, 100, ?, ☕
  2. Standard Fibonacci: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, ?, ☕
  3. Modified Fibonacci: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 40, 80, 100, ?, ☕
  4. Power of 2: 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, ?, ☕
  5. Natural Numbers: 0-20, ?, ☕

You can also customize decks by clicking individual cards to exclude them from your session.

Can I use enum field values as estimation cards?

Yes! When creating a session, you can select an enum field (single or multi-value) as your estimation field. Then check "Use options as cards" checkbox.

This is perfect for teams using custom estimation scales like T-Shirt sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) or custom complexity levels.

What field types can I save estimates to?

Planning Poker Estimation supports:

  • Integer Fields
  • Float Fields (for decimal estimates like 0.5, 1.5, 2.5)
  • Period Fields (for time-based estimates like hours or days)
  • Enum Fields (single or multi-value)

Can I run multiple sessions simultaneously?

Yes! On paid plans, you can run multiple sessions in parallel. This is especially useful for organizations with multiple Scrum teams estimating at the same time.

What's the difference between moderators, estimators, and spectators?

  • Moderators: Create sessions, manage settings, reveal cards, save estimates, control session flow. Count toward moderator limit.
  • Estimators: Participate in voting, select estimation cards, view revealed results. Each unique estimator in a month counts toward your unique estimator limit.
  • Spectators: Observe sessions without voting. Can see revealed cards but cannot participate.

Can I make a session private?

Yes! When creating a session, you can mark it as private. Private sessions are only visible to participants (moderators, estimators, and spectators). Other users won't see the session in the session list. This option is only available for paid plans.

How do estimation timers work?

Moderators can set optional timers for each issue:

  • Auto-start: Timer starts automatically when an issue is selected
  • Manual start: Moderator controls when the timer starts
  • Configurable duration: Set any duration in seconds (e.g., 120 seconds, 300 seconds)
  • Visual countdown: All participants see the countdown
  • Auto-reveal: Timer expiration automatically reveals cards

Can I add or remove issues during a session?

Yes! Moderators can:

  • Add issues: Add new issues from the backlog at any time
  • Remove issues: Remove issues that are no longer needed
  • Reorder issues: Change the order of issues in the session

Changes are synchronized in real-time to all participants.

What languages are supported?

Planning Poker Estimation is fully translated into 16 languages:

English, Polish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Dutch

Language is automatically detected from your YouTrack profile preferences.

Can I see images in issue descriptions?

Yes! Starting from version 1.1.0, images in issue descriptions are rendered directly in the session view. This helps teams make more informed estimates by seeing visual information like mockups, diagrams, or screenshots.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Can't save estimates to a field

Possible causes:

  • Field doesn't exist or was deleted
  • Insufficient permissions to update the field
  • Field type not supported
  • Field is not added to the project

Solutions:

  1. Verify the field exists in YouTrack
  2. Check user permissions for field updates
  3. Ensure field type is Integer, Float, Period, or Enum
  4. Try selecting a different field
  5. Ensure field is added to the project
